What IELTS score do I need for a New Zealand visa?
In short
For skilled residence, the principal applicant needs an overall IELTS band of 6.5. Partners and dependent children aged 16 and over need IELTS 5.0. The Accredited Employer Work Visa minimum is IELTS 4.0 overall. Both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training are accepted for skilled residence. English is a pass or fail threshold: once you reach the minimum band you have met it, and a higher band earns no extra visa points.

Bands shown are overall unless stated. Study entry is set by your education provider under NZQA rules and is often higher, especially for nursing, teaching, and law. Tests must be sat in person at an approved centre, and your result must be less than two years old when you apply. Requirements change, so always confirm the current rule for your situation with Immigration New Zealand and, where helpful, a licensed immigration adviser.
Does Immigration New Zealand accept IELTS?
IELTS Academic and General Training both accepted
Yes. Both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training are accepted by Immigration New Zealand for the Skilled Migrant Category, alongside tests such as PTE Academic and OET. Your test must be sat in person at an approved centre, and your result must be less than two years old when you lodge.
General Training is the common choice for migration. Academic is the version you need for university study and for many professional registration bodies. Speaking and Listening are identical across the two versions; only Reading and Writing differ.
English is a threshold requirement, not extra points
Important
Once you reach the minimum IELTS band for your visa you have met the English requirement, full stop. A higher band adds no visa points. The Skilled Migrant Category is points-based overall, but English is a prerequisite you either clear or you do not; it is not a category where a bigger score earns you more. That is why we coach you to the band you actually need, so you can sit, pass, and move forward.
IELTS for the Skilled Migrant Category
The Skilled Migrant Category, Straight to Residence, and Work to Residence all share the same English standard. Here is what each member of your application needs.
Principal applicant
- Overall IELTS band of 6.5 for skilled residence.
- Test sat in person at an approved centre.
- Result less than two years old when you apply.
- From 24 August 2026, results are valid for five years if you hold a recognised occupational registration.
Partners and dependent children
- Partners and dependent children aged 16 and over need IELTS 5.0.
- Partners below that band can instead pre-pay for approved English lessons (this option is not open to the principal applicant).
- Children aged 15 or younger need no English evidence.

Validity, where to sit, and the One Skill Retake
How long is my IELTS result valid?
An IELTS result is generally valid for two years from the test date. From 24 August 2026, it is valid for five years for applicants who hold a recognised occupational registration. Make sure your result is still valid on the day you lodge. See what to do if your score expires before you lodge.
Where do I sit IELTS in New Zealand?
IELTS is jointly run by the British Council and IDP, with approved test centres including Auckland. You book and sit the official test there. We coach you to test-ready; you book the sitting that suits your timeline.
Missed by one band? One Skill Retake
Computer-delivered IELTS lets you retake a single skill (for example just Writing or just Speaking) instead of sitting the whole test again. If you fall short on one skill, that can be the fastest, cheapest way to clear your threshold.
From mid-2026 IELTS is moving to computer delivery and phasing out paper. Existing paper results stay valid for two years. Computer-delivered results usually arrive in one to two days; paper results take about 13 days.
