In-person IELTS coaching in South Auckland since 2019

Target Language Academy (also trading as Target Education) has coached PTE and IELTS in South Auckland since 2019. We are an in-person school, not an app: you learn in a real classroom, with real tutors who know your name, your target band, and the bits of the test you find hardest.

IELTS comes in two versions, Academic and General Training, and many people are not sure which one they need. We start every learner with a free assessment, recommend the right version and a realistic target, then coach you towards it at a pace that suits your level. Our tutors include Amreen Cheema (Head of Department, with over a decade of IELTS and PTE experience), Nidhi Bakshi (speaking and writing), Rupinder Kaur, and Yogita.

What is IELTS?

In short

IELTS tests all four skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Each is scored from 0 to 9 in half-bands, and your overall band is the average of the four rounded to the nearest half band. Speaking is a live, face-to-face interview marked by a trained human examiner. IELTS is jointly run by the British Council and IDP, available in Auckland, and accepted by Immigration New Zealand and by New Zealand universities.

Two versions for different goals. We coach both and help you choose the right one.

Choose Your Version

IELTS Academic vs General Training: which do you need?

Listening and Speaking are identical in both versions; only Reading and Writing differ. The right choice comes down to what you are applying for.

Choose IELTS Academic if

  • You are applying to study at a New Zealand university, undergraduate or postgraduate
  • You need professional registration in a regulated field such as nursing, teaching, engineering, or medicine
  • Your institution or registration body asks specifically for the Academic version

Choose IELTS General Training if

  • You are on a skilled migration or residence pathway
  • You are applying through a partnership or work visa route
  • You are studying below degree level rather than at a university

Still unsure? That is exactly what the free assessment is for. See our IELTS course options and pricing, or read about IELTS for a New Zealand visa.

Timeline

How long does IELTS preparation take?

Honest answer

It depends on your current level and target band, so there is no fixed timeline. We assess where you are first, then recommend a pace and a course. Some learners reach their band in a few weeks; others take longer, and that is normal. We coach to your level, not to a one-size schedule.

01

Assessment

Book a free assessment. We check your current level and tell you honestly what band is realistic and how long it should take.

02

Plan & target band

We agree the right version (Academic or General Training), your target band, and the course that fits your timeline.

03

Coaching + mock tests

Small group classes on all four skills, with full-length mock tests under real conditions and feedback after each one.

04

Sit when ready

You book the real test once your mock results show you are there, so test day feels familiar, not daunting.

Choosing A Test

IELTS or PTE: which test should you take?

Both are accepted by Immigration New Zealand. Neither is officially easier; the right choice comes down to how you test best.

IELTS may suit you if

  • You prefer a face-to-face speaking section with a human examiner
  • You want the choice of Academic or General Training versions
  • Your institution or registration body references IELTS bands

PTE may suit you if

  • You want a fully computer-based, AI-scored test
  • You prefer the fastest results, typically within 48 hours
  • You are comfortable speaking to a computer rather than a person

Want the full comparison? See our PTE coaching page or read PTE vs IELTS for a New Zealand visa.

Immigration

IELTS for a New Zealand visa

The threshold

For skilled residence, the principal applicant needs IELTS 6.5 overall, and both Academic and General Training are accepted. English here is pass or fail, not points-based: once you meet the minimum, you have met the English requirement, and a higher band earns no extra points. Lower thresholds apply elsewhere; for example, the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) sits at IELTS 4.0 overall for the roles that require a test.

Requirements change, and the exact rule depends on your visa type and role. Always confirm the current requirement with Immigration New Zealand and, if helpful, a licensed immigration adviser. You can read the official Immigration New Zealand English language requirements, or see our own IELTS for a New Zealand visa guide.
